FROM STATEN ISLAND TO SHAOLIN
Wu-Tang Clan formed around Staten Island, New York, in the early 1990s. The members recast Staten Island as “Shaolin,” building a shared world from neighborhood experience, martial-arts cinema, Five Percent Nation vocabulary, comics, chess, and soul records.
The group name was inspired by the kung-fu film Shaolin and Wu Tang. RZA later explained the choice in direct terms: the film presented Wu-Tang sword technique as the best, and the group wanted a name that expressed the same confidence in its lyrics. That is also why martial-arts imagery runs through the aliases, album titles, samples, and the idea of “36 chambers.”
THE ORIGINAL NINE
The 1993 debut-era group was conceived as nine MCs who could operate as one collective while signing separate solo deals. Masta Killa arrived last and appears only once on Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), but he is one of the original nine.
THE TENTH MEMBER
Cappadonna was not part of the original nine-member debut lineup. He became a prominent collaborator on Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..., Ghostface Killah's Ironman, and the group's Wu-Tang Forever. Modern official sources now list him with the Clan, which explains why both nine- and ten-member answers appear online.
